Washington LB Thomas Davis Sr. retiring after 2020 season

The Washington Football Team would win the NFC East title and clinch a home playoff game with a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

Washington also knows Week 17 will be the last time linebacker Thomas Davis Sr. plays in a regular-season contest.

Davis confirmed in an Instagram post shared on Tuesday that he will retire whenever Washington's campaign comes to an end:

The 37-year-old entered the league when the Carolina Panthers selected him 14th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft, and he earned Pro Bowl nods each season from 2015 through 2017. As John Keim noted for ESPN, Davis also won the 2014 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, endured three torn ACLs during his lengthy career and played in Super Bowl 50 as a member of the Panthers.

Now a backup and a mentor to younger players in the Washington locker room, Davis has recorded six total tackles in seven games this season.

It's been a tumultuous couple of weeks for Washington. Starting quarterback and Comeback Player of the Year candidate Alex Smith has battled a calf injury, and Washington dropped two straight games without his services. Head coach Ron Rivera then cut ties with former first-round pick Dwayne Haskins on Monday following this past Sunday's loss to Carolina.

Despite those setbacks, Rivera will hope Davis can do whatever possible to help Washington complete a memorable postseason journey.
