The Tampa Bay Buccaneers visited the White House on Tuesday to be honored for their 31-9 Super Bowl LV victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, and quarterback Tom Brady, naturally, had a great speech prepared for the occasion.
Of course, “naturally” is said because this is pretty much old hat for TB12. He’s now won seven Super Bowls, so Brady knows a thing or two about deft rhetoric around the Oval Office. Courtesy of The Hill, here’s some of what Brady had to say.
Starting things off by thanking President Joe Biden, and proceeding with a team-themed, widespread praise of everyone in the Bucs organization was classy and polished. Definitely in line with how Tom Terrific always carries himself.
What was rather surprising? Brady’s jabs at the expense of former Commander-in-Chief Donald Trump.
At least at one point in time, Brady and Trump were friends, but maybe after years of conspiracy theory-fueled chaos and unfounded claims of voter fraud, Brady had about enough of the man. That’s what he was referencing in the “40 percent” remark quoted above.
Later on, Brady referenced his gaffe from a 20-19 loss the Chicago Bears on "Thursday Night Football," when the Bucs turned the ball over on downs on their final possession. Brady had forgotten which down it was, thinking Tampa Bay had one more play to work with after he threw an incomplete pass.
“I lost track of one down in 21 years of playing, and they started calling me ‘Sleepy Tom’,” Brady said of his Week 5 blunder. “Why would they do that to me?”
This was another dig at Trump. Leading up to the 2020 presidential election, Trump referred to Biden derisively as “Sleepy Joe.” It’s not hard to make the connection here.
So not one, but two digs from Brady sy Trump.
Famously apolitical throughout his career, maybe we’re starting to see a different side of Brady as the end of his playing days draw nearer. Then again, don’t hold your breath on Brady retiring anytime soon, as he’s expected to play at least two more seasons.
