Watch: Troy Aikman calls Cardinals' season a 'dumpster fire'

With a 27-13 loss to the New England Patriots on Monday night, a game where starting quarterback Kyler Murray had to be carted off the field on their third offensive play, the Arizona Cardinals season officially went down the drain.

It's been such a disappointing and awful year in every way that ESPN Monday Night analyst Troy Aikman called the team's situation a "dumpster fire" following the game.

Have a listen.

Aikman not only referred to the team's brutal record on the play, but also the off-field distractions of offensive line coach Sean Kugler being fired during the team's trip to Mexico City and another assistant coach being let go.

Dumpster fire probably is the most accurate way to put this season that started with such high expectations.

It also puts the Cardinals in a brutal spot for the offseason.

They just recommitted to Murray and Kingsbury on long-term deals, but have had zero success with that duo. With Monday's loss the Cardinals are just 28-33-1 in four years with Kingsburry on the sidelines, lost their only playoff game a year ago, and that came after a second half collapse that saw them lose five of their final six games.

Second half collapses have been the calling card of Kingsbury's teams at every stop, and it is happening again this season with losses in five of their past six games. They also go on the road for three of their final four games and will almost certainly be starting a backup quarterback in all of them.

There is no chance they are going to part ways with Murray because he is still their best option under center, assuming he is ready to go at the start of next season.

But the Kingsbury extension is looking like a brutal -- and costly -- decision given the lack of success, second half meltdowns, and off-field distractions that have been happening.

With San Francisco being a steady power in the NFC West and Seattle being better than anybody expected, the Cardinals are facing an uphill battle in terms of turning this thing around quickly.

So, yeah, dumpster fire seems pretty fitting.
