What Cowboys must do in draft after Dak Prescott flop vs. 49ers

The goodwill Dak Prescott accumulated in the wild-card round turned to dust during Sunday's divisional-round loss to the 49ers.

The Cowboys' own social media account placed the blame on Prescott's shoulders.

Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports suggested Dallas look at QBs on the second or third day. He makes perfect sense.

Cowherd noted the Patriots made a habit of drafting QBs during Tom Brady's time with the organization, hitting on one when they selected Jimmy Garoppolo.

Dallas has exciting young players such as Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs and CeeDee Lamb -- all of whom will seek major paydays soon.

QBs projected to be available in the later rounds include Hendon Hooker (Tennessee), Jake Haener (Fresno State), Jaren Hall (BYU) and Max Duggan (TCU).

Those potential QBs can only dream of having the type of success Prescott's had during his career. For as bad as he was against the 49ers, Prescott's routinely been one of the top QBs since he was drafted. The Ringer's Steven Ruiz ranks Prescott as the sixth-best QB in the NFL.

But unless he takes a significant pay cut on his next contract or leads the team to a Super Bowl victory during one of the next two seasons, he's likely entering the final stretch of his Cowboys career.

Prescott called himself out for the disappointing performance against San Francisco, saying, "Those are throws you can't have, not in the playoffs... No excuses," during his postgame comments.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after the game he felt the team "with Dak at quarterback ... had a chance to get to and compete at the top level in this tournament."

The sun may be setting on Prescott's time with the franchise, and his performance on Sunday was the main reason the team lost. If Dallas doesn't begin planning for the future, he could sink their title odds long after he's gone.
