What do we know about Packers undrafted rookie RB Tyler Goodson?

The Green Bay Packers have themselves an elite running back duo in Pro Bowler Aaron Jones and the thunderous A.J. Dillon. Both recorded 1,100+ scrimmage yards in 2021. However, the team is looking for a consistent No. 3 running back behind the both of them. Backup running backs Patrick Taylor and Kylin Hill (tore ACL in Week 8) played in spurts last season. The team added another running back earlier this offseason in undrafted rookie Tyler Goodson. The team signed Goodson out of Iowa after the draft finished up at the beginning of May.

Goodson was a dynamic running back in Iowa City. He totaled over 2,500 rushing yards and over 3,100 scrimmage yards in three seasons. What may have attracted the Packers to Goodson was his ability to grow as a playmaker. He produced more and more yards every single season. Despite playing just eight games as a sophomore compared to 13 as a freshman, he recorded over 100 more yards in his second collegiate season (762), then almost 400 more in his junior year (1,152). He also caught 70 passes in college, which shows his versatility. His junior year was his best at Iowa. He totaled 1,398 total yards and seven touchdowns. No. 15 was an All-Big Ten performer in 2020 and 2021.

The Georgia native has smaller size (5-foot-9, 197 lbs), which makes him quicker and shiftier in between the gaps. He has great speed for an NFL running back (4.42 40-yard dash time). Versatility is very important for the Packers. Goodson certainly has that characteristic. If he comes to training camp and plays up to his capabilities, he should at least make Green Bay's 53-man roster. He is that talented. Just because he went undrafted doesn't mean at all that he can't play. If he explodes onto the scene, he might be able to get valuable playing time in year one. Time will tell.
