Why Eagles should pursue Titans' Derrick Henry amid rumors

What would it take to get Derrick Henry on the Philadelphia Eagles? Not as much as you'd think.

According to Mike Silver of Bally Sports, the Tennessee Titans shopped the star running back at the recent scouting combine. Henry has one year left on his contract with a $10.5 million base salary. He carries a $16 million cap hit for 2023, but the Titans can save $11 million if they trade him after June 1. If Henry leaves in 2024, the Titans could get a third- or fourth-round compensatory pick. Philadelphia’s two first-round picks make their second-round pick somewhat fluid. The 62nd overall pick for a player like Henry seems pretty reasonable for a team with championship aspirations.

At the moment, the Eagles have just two running backs under contract. Free agent Miles Sanders led the team in rushing in 2022, but he could be looking for a $14 million deal.

Even at this point in his career, Henry is a much better back than Sanders. He had more yards, scored more touchdowns and caught more passes last season, and more importantly, he broke more tackles. Henry is a bulldozer. According to Pro Football Reference, he had 35 broken tackles to Sanders’ 13 in 2022. Just imagine how he’d look running behind Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce and Philadelphia's offensive line. The RPO game wouldn’t look bad either.

Prior to last year’s draft, no one imagined the Titans would trade A.J. Brown to the Eagles. If the team can’t find a running back in the draft, Philadelphia needs to make another call.
