Why Patrick Mahomes hates seeing teammates get cut

NFL cut-down day is fast approaching, and it is a nervous time for players chasing a dream and sitting on the roster bubble.

The players on the bubble are not always the only ones that hate it.

Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes also hates it even though he is never going to be in any danger of fighting for a roster spot. He hates it because he hates seeing the dreams of his teammates, even temporary teammates, being crushed.

Here is what he had to say on the subject from NBC Sports.

“It’s hard, I don’t like to follow it too closely,” Mahomes said. “I’m rooting for everybody. It’s hard to sit there and you don’t want to promote for one guy to make it over another guy because this is people’s livelihoods, this is people’s lives. I let those guys, Brett Veach and coach Reid handle that, Clark Hunt everyone like that. They do a good job of finding the best players to put in position to go out there and have success. I don’t follow that too closely. It’s hard for me. I like all the guys in the locker room, it’s hard to see guys, even if it’s for a moment, their dreams kind of get cut right there so it definitely is a hard day for everybody in this league.”

Mahomes isn't just one of the best quarterbacks and players in the NFL, he is also a top-notch leader and teammates and that sort of mindset shows exactly why. 

It has to be a huge confidence boost for a late-round draft pick or undrafted free agent to walk into the Chiefs locker room and have Mahomes openly pulling for you to make the team. 

NFL rosters for the regular season are only 53 players, which means hundreds of players are going to be cut or traded following this weekend's slate of preseason games. Some of them will stick on practice squads, others will get signed by a different team, but the majority of them will probably never play another professional football game again. It is kind of a heavy thought to realize when you watch these preseason games and know that a significant number of players on the roster are quite literally playing for their future profession. 

Rosters must be down to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 29. That means this weekend is huge for hundreds of players still fighting for a roster spot across the league.
