Would Texans be making a mistake if they pass on QB with No. 2 pick?

The idea that Houston won't take a QB with the No. 2 overall pick keeps gaining traction. However, would that be a mistake for the Texans?
"There is a belief around the league that Houston has eyes for [Alabama QB] Bryce Young and isn't sold on the other Round 1 QBs," wrote ESPN's Matt Miller. "I know the Texans love edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. [Alabama], the team's top-ranked prospect overall, and he could land with the Texans."

The 6-foot-3, 253-pound pass-rusher is a fantastic prospect, whose NFL comparison is Pro Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware, per NFL.com's Lance Zierlein. Yet the Texans need a competent starting QB.

Presumptive starter Davis Mills tied the league lead in interceptions (15 in 15 games played) and ranked 29th in QBR (33.1). Backup Case Keenum is 35 years old and has only started two games over the past three seasons.

Even if Anderson Jr. is the best player on the board, passing on a QB during the first round on April 27 carries risk, especially in a class deep at the position.

Although ESPN's Adam Schefter recently said he thinks Young will be the No. 1 pick, Ohio State's C.J. Stroud, Florida's Anthony Richardson and Kentucky's Will Levis could be available.

Houston has another first-rounder (No. 12 overall) but Stroud, Levis and Richardson could fly off the board beforehand. Each is a projected top-10 pick, per Tankathon.

The Texans made a similar move in 2006, selecting former Pro Bowl DE Mario Williams as the No. 1 overall pick when former Texas QB Vince Young was still available.

It was the right call since Young flamed out in Tennessee, but Houston only made the playoffs once in six seasons with Williams, proving a productive pass-rusher can't carry an organization like a franchise QB.
While taking Anderson Jr. isn't egregious, Houston might regret the selection if it fails to find a star QB.
