Sean McVay says Cam Akers has future with Rams

The Los Angeles Rams are just a few weeks removed from trying unsuccessfully to trade running back Cam Akers.

But following his 118-yard, three-touchdown performance in Sunday’s 51-14 win over the Denver Broncos, head coach Sean McVay has reversed course, stating the 23-year-old tailback is very much a part of the team’s future plans.

“I think right now, with what he’s done continuing to build on that momentum, I think it’d be silly (to trade him) based on what a great job he’s done to think of it anything differently than him being a big part of what you want to be able to do moving forward,” McVay said on Monday, via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times. “There’s totally a different trajectory in terms of what he’s done. And the way that he’s handled himself and the way that he’s playing the way like we know he’s capable of and hopefully you just continue to see him build on it these last couple weeks and into next year with the Rams.”

Akers took a two-week hiatus from the Rams in October as they fielded offers for the former second-round pick. He rushed for 151 yards and a single touchdown up to that point, but he’d been passed on the depth chart by Darrell Henderson Jr.

Since returning to the lineup on Nov. 6, Akers has led the Rams in rushing in six of eight games while scoring six touchdowns.
