The Philadelphia Flyers made their first move of the 2022 off-season; inking Nick Seeler to a two-year deal worth $775,000 AAV.

In 43 games last season Seeler finished with 1 goal, 2 assists and a -3 rating and 13:05 of average ice time. He served 29 penalty minutes, had 67 shots blocked, 75 hits, and 17 giveaways.

This is a perfectly fine move. On paper, going into next season the Flyers have Ivan Provorov, Cam York, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Travis Sanheim locked into their roles. Add in Ryan Ellis who should be due back from his lengthy stay on the IR and Ronnie Attard who impressed in limited time last season and the Flyers essentially have their defense filled out.

Seeler is a fiery player who will compete for a spot as the seventh defenseman, which is ideal. There’s no need to bring up a prospect, like Adam Ginning, to sit in the press box for long stretches of time. If Seeler makes the roster he will have a low cap hit. If he’s sent to down to the Phantoms his salary won’t count against the cap. A low-risk signing for a team in transition, fine work from Chuck Fletcher here.
