Dylan Strome scored a power play goal 1:41 into overtime Wednesday night for the host Washington Capitals, who edged the New York Islanders 3-2.

Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson was whistled for tripping 43 seconds into the extra session to set up the power play that ended with Strome firing a shot off Semyon Varlamov, who was screened by Capitals right winger Tom Wilson.

Hendrix Lapierre and Joel Edmundson scored in regulation for the Capitals, who have won two straight following a two-game losing streak (0-1-1). Goalie Darcy Kuemper made 30 saves.

Hudson Fasching and Anders Lee scored for the Islanders, who have lost three of four (1-1-2) but have collected at least one point in 16 of their last 18 games (10-2-6). Varlamov recorded 34 saves.

The Capitals took a 1-0 lead following a turnover by the Islanders deep in their zone just before the midway point of the first. Brock Nelson's pass was picked off by Aliaksei Protas, who dished to Lapierre in the slot. In one motion, Lapierre whirled and fired a shot that glanced off Varlamov's stick arm and into the net with 10:04 left.

The Islanders tied the score early in the second. Fasching lost control of the puck near the Capitals' net as Wilson closed in, but Cal Clutterbuck stole the puck from Rasmus Sandin and passed to Fasching, whose wraparound shot glanced off Kuemper's left knee and over the goal line at the 1:03 mark.

The Capitals went ahead again with 6:48 left in the second when Edmundson's slap shot from just in front of the blue line sailed beyond the glove of Varlamov, who was screened by Protas as well as Islanders defenseman Mike Reilly.

Lee capped a chaotic sequence by scoring the tying goal with 7:58 left in the third. Wilson knocked Lee down during a lengthy battle for the puck in the Capitals' zone, but Lee got up, picked off a pass by John Carlson and shuffled to his backhand before beating Kuemper.
