The Dallas Stars will buy out the remainder of Ryan Suter’s contract, according to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek.

“With one year remaining on Suter’s deal this move will add $1.4 million on the Stars cap for the next two seasons,” Marek said on social media. “The Stars will save $1.4 million with the buyout.”

Last season, the 39-year-old Suter scored two goals and 15 assists for 17 points, averaging 18:56 of ice time in 82 games with the Stars. Since joining the club ahead of the 2021-22 season, he’s played all 82 regular-season games each year with Dallas.

Suter becomes the second player in NHL history to be bought twice, the first being Tony DeAngelo. In July 2021, the Minnesota Wild bought out the remaining four years of Suter’s contract.

In 19 NHL seasons, Suter has compiled an impressive resume, scoring 105 goals and 576 assists for 681 points, averaging 24:21 of ice time in 1,444 career regular-season games with the Stars, Wild and Nashville Predators.

Taken No. 7 overall by the Predators in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Suter spent one season playing college hockey with the Wisconsin Badgers, then a season with the Predators’ AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, during the 2004-05 lockout. He thrived right away, scoring seven goals and 16 assists for 23 points in 63 games with the Admirals.

He continued dominating with the Predators between 2005-06 and 2011-12, scoring 38 goals and 200 assists for 238 points and being one of the more consistent two-way defenders in the game.

As an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2012-13 season, Suter and fellow UFA Zach Parise signed identical 13-year, $98 million contracts with the Wild. After his first season, he was a finalist for the James Norris Trophy for the league’s top defender.

During his nine seasons with the Wild, he scored 55 goals and 314 assists for 369 points, averaging 27:02 of ice time in 656 regular-season games.
