New Jersey Devils right wing Timo Meier Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

The New Jersey Devils signed forward Timo Meier to an eight-year contract extension, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported Wednesday.

Meier’s new contract reportedly carries an $8.8 million cap hit through the 2030–31 season. The 26-year-old forward scored 40 goals and 66 points in 78 games split between the Devils and San Jose Sharks in 2022–23.

The Devils originally acquired Meier from the Sharks at the 2023 trade deadline alongside Scott Harrington, Timur Ibragimov, Zachary Emond, Santeri Hatakka and a 2024 fifth-round pick in exchange for Shakir Mukhamadullin, Andreas Johnsson, Fabian Zetterlund, Nikita Okhotyuk, a 2023 first-round pick, a conditional 2024 first-round pick and a 2024 seventh-round pick.

After racking up 31 goals and 52 points in 57 games with the Sharks prior to the trade, Meier scored nine goals and 14 points in 21 games after the deadline. The Swiss forward added two goals and four points in 11 playoff games while battling an upper-body injury.

Meier had been set to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights this summer. He was due a one-year, $10 million qualifying offer from the Devils on June 30.

The Sharks originally selected Meier in the first round (No. 9 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. The 6-foot, 210-pound winger made his NHL debut with the Sharks in the 2016–17 season.

Meier reached the 30-goal plateau three times as a Shark. Through 472 career games over parts of seven NHL seasons with the Sharks and Devils, Meier has amassed 163 goals and 330 points; he’s added nine goals and 24 points in 46 playoff games.

The Devils finished the 2022–23 season with a 52–22–8 record and 112 points in 82 games, enough to finish second in the Metropolitan Division and third in the National Hockey League. They were eliminated by the Carolina Hurricanes in five games in the second round of the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs.
