According to multiple reports, the Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenseman Troy Stecher from the Arizona Coyotes.

PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan reported on Thursday that the Coyotes received a 2027 fourth-round pick from the Oilers in exchange for Stecher and a 2024 seventh-round pick.

Stecher, 29, has one goal and five points while averaging 18:26 of ice time in 47 games with the Coyotes this year. The 5’10” defenseman is under contract through the end of the season at a $1.1 million cap hit.

Jordan Schmaltz, the brother of Coyotes forward Nick Schmaltz, was the first to break the news of Stecher being traded to Edmonton on Thursday morning.

Stecher is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He’s signed his last two contracts with the Coyotes and has now been moved by the team at back-to-back trade deadlines.

The Vancouver Canucks originally signed Stecher, who’s from the Vancouver suburb of Richmond, as an undrafted college free agent from the University of North Dakota in 2016.

Stecher spent the first four seasons of his NHL career with his hometown Canucks, helping them reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2020 and appearing in 17 postseason contests with the team that year.

The Canucks opted not to re-sign Stecher after that season and he signed a two-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings as an unrestricted free agent. He spent parts of two seasons in Detroit before being flipped to the Los Angeles Kings at the 2022 trade deadline.

Stecher split the 2022–23 season between the Coyotes and Calgary Flames before returning to the desert on another one-year deal. Unless he signs an extension with the Oilers, he’d be eligible to sign another deal with the Coyotes in July if he so chooses.

Through 487 career games over parts of eight NHL seasons with the Canucks, Red Wings, Kings, Coyotes, and Flames, Stecher has collected 19 goals and 108 points. He’s added four goals and seven points in 21 playoff contests.
