Florida Panthers goalie uses artwork from children's hospital patients for new mask
Florida Panthers goalie Spencer Knight is introducing a new mask and it might have the most original art work of any goalie in recent memory.
Instead of using a professional artist, Knight enlisted the help of patients at Joe DiMaggio's Children's Hospital in nearby Hollywood, Florida to make some art work for him.
This is what they produced for him.
Regardless of what the artwork looks like, that is simply a fantastic gesture by Knight to give kids a creative outlet and do something cool for them during what is almost certainly a difficult time.
The 21-year-old Knight is in his third year in the NHL after being selected in the first-round (No. 13 overall) by the Panthers in the 2019 NHL Draft. He owns a 32-16-6 record in his career with a .908 save percentage.
Goalies have been painting their masks since the early 1970s, when former Boston Bruins goalie Gerry Cheevers started painting stitches on his mask to illustrate the number of times he was hit there with a stick or puck. Since then, the designs have become increasingly more elaborate and professional. While every goalie in the league does something creative with their mask, Knight went in a different direction this time, and it is awesome. Great work by everybody involved.
