GOALIE GOAL! Ryan Fanti continues to have an eventful season with the Fort Wayne Komets. With under two minutes left in the third period, Fanti was able to launch the puck from behind his net into an open net against the Rapid City Crush. This is the first goalie goal in Komets history since first entering the ECHL in 1990.
Earlier this past month Fanti was also involved in a goalie fight. The odds of a goalie having a fight and goal in the same month are incredibly rare. Mike Smith is likely the only other goalie to have a combination of both however Smith’s goal came against the Detroit Red Wings when he was a member of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2013. Then of course the legendary fight in 2020 against the Calgary Flames. Speaking of Smith, he also scored a goal in the ECHL back in 2002 with the Lexington Men O’War.
Fanti isn’t the first Oilers goalie prospect to score a goal. Back in 2016, before he was drafted by Edmonton, Stuart Skinner was able to find the back of the net as a member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes. At the time, he was the 7th goaltender to ever score a goalie goal in the WHL. Ryan Fanti becomes the 15th goalie in ECHL history to score a goal and the second one this season. The first was Francois Brassard.
When it comes to the big club, no goalie has ever scored a goal for the Edmonton Oilers. Sure some have been close. Mike Smith always had a habit to give it shot when the opportunity arose.
The Komets defeated the Rush tonight 6-3. So far this season they sit fourth in the central division of the ECHL with a record of 31-24-4. Fanti on the other hand has played 29 games with 13 wins, 3.43 goals against average, and a .897 save percentage.
