Hurricanes, Brind’Amour reach agreement on multi-year extension

Brind’Amour was in the final season of his contract, and there was some uncertainty surrounding whether or not he would return next season. While this kind of uncertainty is normally due to either the coach being on the hot seat or, to a lesser extent, the coach deciding to step away, this was more of a unique concern. Many believed that Brind’Amour would command a salary too high for the Hurricanes to match and go elsewhere, but ultimately, the two parties came to a mutual agreement on what they wanted.

There is currently no confirmation on the details of the extension’s salary or term outside of the fact that it is at least two years.

Brind’Amour had just concluded his sixth season as the head coach of the Hurricanes, which saw the Hurricanes finish in second place in the Metropolitan Division and third in the league with a 52-23-7 record. However, they still couldn’t get over the hump in the postseason, and were ousted in the second round for the third time in the past four seasons at the hands of the New York Rangers.

Brind’Amour has coached the Canes to a 278-130-44 record in the regular season over the course of his six seasons as head coach, good enough for the second-best winning percentage in the league in that span.

The Canes have also made the playoffs in all six seasons, but they’ve struggled to go all the way, only making it out of the second round twice during his tenure and getting swept both times. Still, he’s created a culture of consistency in Carolina, as before his tenure began, they hadn’t made the playoffs since he retired as a player.
