Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews tests positive for COVID-19

On a day when positive coronavirus tests rocked multiple sports competitions, Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews was, as of the publishing of this piece, the biggest name of the group.

On Friday, Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun reported that Matthews, who finished the pandemic-shortened regular season with 47 goals, second behind only Alex Ovechkin and David Pastrnak (48) in that category, is quarantining and self-isolating at his Arizona residence after testing positive for COVID-19.

Neither Matthews nor the Leafs offered statements to the Sun on Friday.

As things stand today, training camps for the 24-team model to crown a Stanley Cup champion are scheduled to open July 10. The 22-year-old alternate captain should be able to join his Toronto teammates by then as long as he records a negative test.

Before the Sun's report, TSN's Bob McKenzie tweeted that at least five people associated with the Tampa Bay Lightning came up positive for COVID-19 in the latest round of testing.

Positive COVID-19 tests filled other sports headlines on June 19. The Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays both shut Florida facilities down amid coronavirus concerns. The Phillies reported at least eight positive tests, while a Toronto player recently in Philadelphia's system was showing symptoms of the virus.

In addition, PGA Tour golfer Nick Watney became the first known tour member to test positive.

At least one San Francisco 49ers player training in Nashville tested positive, according to multiple NFL Network reporters.
