Nico Hischier named captain of Devils in fourth season with team

In his fourth season with the franchise, the New Jersey Devils have named Nico Hischier their next captain.

Hischier joins Nashville Predators captain Roman Josi as one of the only Swiss-born captains in the NHL.

The 22-year-old becomes the 12th player to captain the Devils since their move to New Jersey in 1982. New Jersey has not had a captain since the 2018-19 season. Andy Greene was the franchise's last captain from 2015-19 until the Devils traded him to the New York Islanders.

Hischier was selected by the Devils first overall in the 2017 draft. He missed the first 11 games of the 2020-21 season with an ankle injury, but is expected to make his debut on Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres.

In 209 career games, he has notched 135 points (51 goals, 84 assists).
