Paul Maurice shockingly resigns as head coach of Jets after eight-plus seasons

The Winnipeg Jets have posted a winning record in each of the past five seasons and six of Paul Maurice's seven full seasons as head coach. Despite this, the 54-year-old has decided to move on from the gig.

Maurice landed his first NHL head-coaching job during the 1995-1996 campaign with the Hartford Whalers. In two seasons in Connecticut, Maurice helped the Whalers go 61-72-19.

Maurice then spent the next six-plus seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes, posting four winning seasons, including a run to the 2002 Stanley Cup Final. Maurice's first tenure with Carolina ended in 2003, before he returned to the organization in 2008 after two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Ontario, Canada native stayed with the Hurricanes until 2011 before joining the Jets in 2013.

Maurice's career coaching record is 775-680-99-130, good for a .528 winning percentage.
