Adam Fox had an amazing season for the New York Rangers that ended with a Norris Trophy. On a recent episode of NHL.com’s At The Rink Podcast, he addressed the vacant captaincy on the team.

Host Dan Rosen asked him if he felt not having a captain was a missing element. Fox’s response was poised and informative.

Adam Fox on the Rangers needing a captain

“It’s tough to say about needing one. i think we’ve had some guys who are great leaders, and guys with experience,” he began. “The way our team has been with young guys, it would have helped with some direction with one guy to have a voice in that sense.”

Chris Drury has made it a point this season to name a captain, which is an absolute different approach than the way former President John Davidson and GM Jeff Gorton handled it.

The previous management group did not want to rush naming a captain and wanted to allow that player to emerge. However, after two seasons that never happened. Drury is now allowing Gallant to get to know the players more in order to help make the final decision.

“I think every team needs multiple guys to step up and be a leader,” Fox continued. “I think it’s nice to have one guy who is the voice but you need a lot of guys to step up.”

Finally, when he was asked if he was the guy to be captain, Fox laughed it off. “That ain’t up to me – you’re asking the wrong guy.”
