Report: Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry faces shots but return 'far from imminent'

It appears the Pittsburgh Penguins will have to continue relying on third-choice goaltender Louis Domingue through their first-round playoff series against the New York Rangers. They lead 2-1 heading into Monday night's Game 4 in Pittsburgh.

According to Mike DeFabo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Penguins All-Star goalie Tristan Jarry faced "a few light shots in a controlled environment from goaltending coach Andy Chiodo" on Monday. Jarry hasn't played since April 14 because of a reported right foot injury that DeFabo referred to as "a broken foot," and DeFabo added that the 27-year-old will require "multiple" good practices before he's ready to resume playing.

"His return is far from imminent," DeFabo wrote.

Casey DeSmith served as Pittsburgh's fill-in starter until he was lost to an injury during the second overtime period of Game 1 and underwent season-ending core muscle surgery on Friday morning. Domingue, who made only two NHL regular-season starts in 2021-22, saved 17 shots in relief of DeSmith in Game 1 but has since allowed nine goals in the past two contests. As Tim Benz noted for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Domingue "is poor at going side-to-side" and, thus, has been beaten by shots because "he goes too far in his haste."

Alex D'Orio, recalled from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League last week, is currently Pittsburgh's backup option at goalie.
