Ottawa Senators defenseman Michael Del Zotto Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

The Ottawa Senators are trying to send another expensive player to the minors.

A couple of weeks ago, the Sens put Matt Murray and his $6,250,000 cap hit on waivers. He cleared and has been playing for AHL Binghamton since.

Next up, it’s defenseman Michael Del Zotto going on the waiver wire.

Del Zotto, who came into the season with 710 NHL games over 12 seasons under his belt, was signed by Ottawa in order to be a veteran mentor on the team’s blueline. Through 10 games, he’s logging 17:16 per game, has six points and an on-ice goal differential of 8-to-13 at even strength.

There have been rumors that Del Zotto has requested a trade because he’s upset with his playing time in Ottawa. He’s in the first year of a two-year contract that pays him $2 million annually.
