Ottawa Senators head coach D.J. Smith announced Saturday morning that defenseman Jakob Chychrun is out for a few weeks with a lower-body injury.

Coach Smith told reporters Friday that Chychrun was doubtful for Saturday’s game against the New Jersey Devils and that the defenseman “tugged something there a little bit, we’ll see how he reacts to treatment here.” Chychrun had left Thursday night’s 7-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning with a lower-body injury.

During the second period, Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman slew-footed Chychrun, then in the third period, he and Lightning forward Michael Eyssimont crashed into the boards. He was able to get up but made his way to the bench favoring his left leg before heading down the tunnel to the locker room. Chychrun logged one assist, one shot, three hits and five blocks in 18:07 of ice time that game.

The 24-year-old has registered two goals and three assists for five points in 12 games since being acquired from the Arizona Coyotes in a trade on March 1. He has recorded nine goals and 33 points this season, split between the Coyotes and the Senators.

Additionally, the Senators also announced that 20-year-old rookie Ridly Greig’s season is done as he deals with a sternum injury.

He last played in Thursday’s 7-2 win over the Bolts, logging 12:21 of ice time. This season, he has registered one goal and six points in 16 games. He had five points in his last 10 games. Greig was selected in the first round (No. 28) in the 2020 NHL Draft and spent his entire major junior career with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL. Greig has also spent time in the AHL with the Belleville Senators, racking up 13 goals and 27 points in 35 games this season.
