Sharks trade star D Brent Burns to Hurricanes

Longtime San Jose Sharks defenseman and NHL iron man Brent Burns bid adieu to the West Coast on Wednesday. He was dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes as part of a multi-part trade at the start of free agency.

The 37-year-old blue liner has three years left on an eight-year, $64 million deal he signed with Team Teal that included a modified no-trade clause that required his permission if the tam wanted to move him. The Sharks will reportedly retain 33 percent of that contract, resulting in a $2.64 million cap hit over the next three seasons.

Burns spent 11 seasons with the Sharks after being acquired from the Minnesota Wild. He led the Sharks with 594 points in 798 games over that span. The team's single Norris Trophy winner had his lowest stat line in his tenure with San Jose during the 2022 season, registering just 54 points (10 goals, 44 assists) and a minus-15 through 82 games played.

While the move did indeed have to get Burns' stamp of approval, it's still a huge end-of-an-era move made possible by new general manager Mike Grier, whose hiring has been at the forefront of major changes to the Sharks over the last couple of weeks.

San Jose finished third from the bottom of the Pacific Division last season with 77 points, ending the year with three straight losses.
