Tim Tebow explains why he invested in expansion hockey club
Tim Tebow and ice hockey don't seem to mix. Nevertheless, the former Heisman Trophy winner has become a majority owner of an expansion minor league hockey team, and he recently he explained why.
Speaking with Adam Kimelman of NHL.com, Tebow revealed several reasons hockey caught his eye but said the sport's passionate fans stood out.
"I would say that's also something hockey does an amazing job [of], in all levels, the passionate fans, they love and they care about it so much," Tebow said.
Earlier this week, the ECHL announced a new expansion club in Lake Tahoe, owned by Tebow and Management Group, LLC CEO David Hodges. Tebow already owns a minority stake in two ECHL clubs, the Savannah Ghost Pirates and Jacksonville Icemen, so this isn't his first foray into hockey. However, even as majority owner of the Lake Tahoe club, Tebow says he won't be meddling too much in the team's operations but will show his face often at the arena.
And, for those wondering, Tebow doesn't plan on taking the ice either, telling Kimelman that he wasn't looking to break an "ankle or wrist."
Tebow's new ECHL team in Lake Tahoe will drop the puck for the first time in October 2024, and he seems excited to see what it produces, not only on the ice but in the local community.
"I think the product will be a competitive hockey team, but it's also a product that brings families together to give kids memories and joy and dreams," Tebow said.
