Veteran goalie Eddie Lack announces retirement from NHL
With the league on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, a former NHL goaltender has announced his retirement from the league. Eddie Lack, former goalie for the Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils, announced his retirement from hockey via Twitter on Monday afternoon.
The 32-year-old revealed hip injuries are preventing him from continuing to play, but he doesn't regret moving on.
“My hip issues have come to the point where I can live a normal life, which I’m extremely grateful for, but unfortunately it’s not good enough to play professional hockey,” Lack said in the video. “I’m content with the decision as I know I’ve done everything in my power to come back but it just wasn’t meant to be.”
Lack made his NHL debut during the 2013-14 season for the Canucks, serving as backup to All-Stars Roberto Luongo and Ryan Miller before moving on to the Hurricanes in 2015.
Over his NHL career, he appeared in 144 games, posting a 56-55-18 record, 2.62 goals-against average, .909 save percentage and nine shutouts.
Lack said earlier in the year that he would not play this season due to his hip injury, but he did volunteer as Arizona State's goaltending coach.
