Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Egor Zamula has had a fun start to 2024.

The Russian defenseman has turned over a new leaf since being promoted to the first power play unit quarterback. Excluding Sunday’s game against the Ottawa Senators, Zamula had picked up four assists through 10 games in 2024, with three coming on the man advantage.

Then, to open the scoring against the Senators, Zamula further rewarded head coach John Tortorella’s faith in him by burying a long-range shot on the power play in what will go down as one of the weirdest goals of the season. Watch below.

The 23-year-old alertly detected a high-flying loose puck which was created by a Joel Farabee shot that glanced off of Mads Sogaard’s shoulder and soared high into the air. Everyone but Zamula appeared to assume Sogaard had it in his breadbasket. Instead, Zamula was Johnny-on-the-spot for the Flyers.

The Flyers defenseman would later bury his second goal of the afternoon, with that one coming at even strength off of a heavy shot from the high slot. Farabee had the primary assist on that one as well, boosting himself up to 39 points in 47 games with three total points and a power play goal of his own just over halfway through the second period.

As for Zamula, he assisted Farabee’s power play goal, giving him two goals and an assist against Ottawa. His career year continues, as he’s now up to five goals, 10 assists, and 15 points in 38 games played. He did, however, mishandle a puck at the blueline, which allowed former Flyer Zack MacEwen to get loose on a breakaway and snipe a shot past Sam Ersson for Ottawa’s first of two goals on the afternoon.
