No one has seen the red lights on a Pittsburgh Penguins power play since the troop scored a few on Nov. 4, 2023 against the San Jose Sharks. The date was headed toward immortality as the Penguins were scoreless in their last 37 power plays.

The streak is no more. Done. –Fin–

Sometimes, they were achingly inept. Other times, they were disorganized or overthinking to an extreme. Opponents routinely created shorthanded chances against the Penguins, more so than the Penguins’ power play created.

The mayhem finally ended early in the first period of the Penguins’ game against the Arizona Coyotes. Jake Guentzel broke the slump at 1:12 of the first period when he beat Arizona goalie Connor Ingram with a high wrister. Sidney Crosby and Valtteri Puustinen assisted.

The goal gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead.

In a circus first period, the Penguins trailed 2-1 late in the first period until Jeff Carter scored on a shorthanded breakaway.

The hockey gods were definitely having some spicy eggnog Tuesday.
