U.S. ski star Mikaela Shiffrin finishes ninth in super-G

Mikaela Shiffrin didn't medal in the women's Super-G, but for the first time at the 2022 Winter Olympics, she finished an event.

Shiffrin, 26, had a shocking start to the Olympics in Beijing when she skied out in her first runs in the giant slalom and the slalom, despite being a gold-medal favorite in both events. While Shiffrin won gold in the slalom in 2014 and the giant slalom in 2018, Friday was her first-ever attempt at the Super-G in the Olympics.

While Shiffrin started fast, she couldn't keep pace with the time set by Switzerland's Lara Gut-Behrami.

She was in eighth place immediately after her run, but Shiffrin ultimately finished ninth after all the skiers were done. Gut-Behrami's time held and she finished with the gold medal, ahead of Austria's Mirjam Puchner and Switzerland's Michelle Gisin, who earned silver and bronze, respectively.

Shiffrin is expected to finish her Olympic program with downhill and combined. She earned a silver medal in combined at the 2018 Olympics and has never competed in the downhill.
