New York City Marathon canceled due to coronavirus concerns

The world's largest marathon in New York City has officially been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers announced Wednesday, according to Jackie Salo of the New York Post.

The five-borough race, which hosts more than 50,000 runners from across the globe, would've celebrated its 50th anniversary on Nov. 1. It is now set to take place on Nov. 7, 2021.

“While the marathon is an iconic and beloved event in our city, I applaud New York Road Runners for putting the health and safety of both spectators and runners first,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

Runners who entered in this year's race have the option to get a full refund or receive a complimentary, guaranteed spot to compete in one of the events held within the next three years.

The New York City marathon drew participants from 129 countries in 2019, and Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya won the men's race last year. Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya won the women's race.

New York City's marathon wasn't the only one canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 125th Boston Marathon was canceled and now will take place on April 19, 2021. The Twin Cities Marathon in Minnesota also was canceled and all events will be virtual this year.
