Shaun White finishes just off podium with fourth-place finish in last-ever Olympics

Snowboarding legend Shaun White finished fourth place in the men's snowboarding halfpipe final Friday morning at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

White, 35, is a three-time gold medalist in the event and announced last week that his fifth Olympics would be his last. While he was in jeopardy of not making the final, White nailed a clutch run on his final chance to qualify.

In the final, White started with a modest score of 72 in his first run, but upped it to 85 in his second run. That had him just 2.5 points behind Switzerland's Jan Scherrer for third place, but White wiped out in his last ever Olympic run.

The gold in the men's halfpipe went to Japan's Ayumu Hirano, who posted a score of 96 in his third run, vaulting him ahead of Australia's Scotty James. The run for Hirano saved the event from controversy as NBC commentator Todd Richards railed against the judges for not awarding the Japanese snowboarder more points in his second run.

While White didn't win, his Olympic record score of 97.75 set in 2018 held.
