Milan midfielder Yacine Adli admits his new role is a ‘key aspect’ in his development at San Siro but insists he wants to ‘improve’ to earn a France call-up one day.

The French midfielder is expected to start for Milan on Thursday in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16 against Slavia Praha.

He has become a semi-regular starter at the Stadio Meazza, which is partially surprising because he managed only six appearances across all competitions in 2022-23.

“The role has been a key aspect, which I’ve changed this season,” the 23-year-old admitted during a pre-match press conference, as quoted by Milannews.

“Last year it was different because I had many quality players ahead of me. It was not easy, but I’ve worked hard and I must thank the coach, the staff and the team. I’ve improved a lot, but I’ve always been myself during this journey and I want to improve more to help the team.”

Adli was seen as an attacking midfielder last season, but in 2023-24 he’s been deployed as a deep-lying playmaker or as a defensive midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

“I am happy to play and help Milan. Playing for France is an objective, but the pathway is still long. Right now, I am only thinking about Milan and this season,” he replied when asked if he dreams of playing for France one day.

“I’ve improved compared to last season thanks to the work of staff members and my teammates’ help. I must continue like this.”

Adli has never played for the senior France national team, but has one goal in five appearances with Les Blues’ U20 squad.

Regarding tomorrow’s European fixture with Slavia Praha, Adli said: “These games are important for everyone at Milan. It’s not the Champions League, but we care about this competition so much. We want to go all the way, and tomorrow, we’ll face an important opponent. They have physicality, and they will put intensity into the whole game. We are aware of it.”

Milan have never won Europa League in their history and dropped to Europe’s second club competition after finishing third in their Champions League group.
