Antonio Rudiger of Real Madrid MB Media

Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final puts them within touching distance of a second final in three years, and it came all while Erling Haaland barely got a chance out of David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger.

The Norwegian superstar had just one true chance to speak of but his movement and shot were expertly read by Alaba, with the Austrian blocking his effort almost as soon as it left his foot.

Rüdiger’s defending of Haaland was a little more unorthodox, which is something we have come to expect from the former Chelsea man.

Starting in place of the suspended Eder Militao, the German international barely let City’s star man out of his sight or his grasp, more or less holding him at certain points of the game, as you can see below.

Rüdiger might drop out of the lineup next week for the second leg with the return of the Brazilian defender but he helped keep Madrid in the contest with marking that hasn’t been seen on Haaland too often this season.
