AT&T Stadium reportedly picked to hold 2026 men's World Cup Final

Two years from now, the biggest game to take place at any NFL stadium won't be the Super Bowl.

According to The Sun from the U.K., AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will host the men's World Cup final when the world's biggest sporting event comes to North America in 2026. The home of the Dallas Cowboys beat out MetLife Stadium, which is shared by the New York Giants and Jets. The place dubbed "Jerry World" after team owner Jerry Jones won a hotly contested competition to woo FIFA officials in their decision to bring the final to either the Dallas metroplex or the New York/New Jersey region.

While The Sun calls the selection a surprise, it's far from an out-of-nowhere pick. AT&T Stadium has hosted and been in competition for national and global events since opening in 2009. It has hosted the 2010 NBA All-Star Game alongside the Dallas Mavericks, featured several world championship boxing cards, two WrestleManias and several major college football games, including the first College Football Playoff National Championship Game won by Ohio State in 2015.

With the Cowboys flaming out in spectacular fashion in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs, AT&T is set to begin a planned $180 million renovation that's focused on upgrading the stadium's premium seating. The 14-year-old stadium cost $1.15 billion to build as it was replacing the iconic Texas Stadium.

AT&T Stadium, which can expand its seating to hold 100,000 spectators, will be one of 16 different stadiums across the continent that will have games. Eleven are in the U.S, but not a single stadium that hosted the 1994 World Cup will have a match since most of those venues are either demolished or defunct.
