Cowboys' stadium to begin $180 million upgrade in 2024

It looks as if "The House that Jerry Built" is getting few nips and tucks after the 2023 NFL season.

AT&T Stadium, home to the Dallas Cowboys since 2009, will undergo a $180 million renovation starting in January 2024. The new project will focus on upgrading the premium suites, according to the Dallas Morning News, but will not change the overall structure of the facility.

The renovations will take place just after New Year's Day and will go through July 2025, one year away from hosting matches for the 2026 men's World Cup.

In December, the NFL approved of a $295 million plan to spruce up the merely 14-year-old facility so that it could keep up with the amenities of more recently constructed stadiums such as Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and proposed developments in Nashville and Buffalo.

The Arlington-based stadium replaced the iconic Texas Stadium in Irving, following the footsteps of countless new venues in the United States that were built to increase the numbers of luxury boxes — therefore, potential in-stadium revenues — over the past 30 years. However, considering that this was the stadium of "America's Team," it was built to be a global showcase for more than football. It has hosted several championship boxing cards, two WrestleMania events, the 2010 NBA All-Star Game, major college football and basketball games, and more. It's rumored to be in the running to host the men's World Cup final in 2026, which would be music to the ears of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

In a time where several sports teams are threatening relocation if their home governments don't approve financing for their current stadiums, it could be a small comfort that the Cowboys aren't toying with their community's emotions after playing politics throughout the 2000s to build AT&T.

Speaking of Jones, perhaps new furniture and repainted walls would come just in time for Netflix's arrival as the streamer will develop a docuseries on the dynastic Cowboys of the 1990s, a "Last Dance" look at the last dizzying heights of "America's Team." You can expect he'll be front and center, for better or worse.
