Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies diagnosed with myocarditis after COVID-19 bout

It appears Bayern Munich will be without 21-year-old star and Canadian international Alphonso Davies for some time.

Per Bayern's website, manager Julian Nagelsmann confirmed Friday that Davies is temporarily being shut down from training sessions after he was diagnosed with mild myocarditis, a heart condition often linked with COVID-19 cases.

According to the BBC, Davies hasn't featured for the German giants since he contracted the coronavirus on Dec. 17.

"With Phonzy, when we did our follow-up examination yesterday that we do with every player that has had COVID-19, we detected signs of mild myocarditis, i.e. an inflammation of the heart muscle," Nagelsmann explained. "He'll sit out training until further notice. He won't be available, also in the coming weeks. The ultrasound shows this myocarditis isn't so dramatic but it's a sign of myocarditis. Still, it has to heal and that will definitely take some time."

The Athletic reports Davies will miss at least four weeks of action, meaning he won't play in Canada's three upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The Associated Press adds that "myocarditis is a mild, temporary condition in the vast majority of cases," which suggests Davies could be back on the pitch at some point next month.

Bayern sit atop the Bundesliga table on 43 points, six points ahead of rivals Borussia Dortmund, and face FC Köln (sixth, 28 points) on Saturday.
