Carl Starfelt has revealed that he had a period of poor health following his departure from Celtic last summer. The Scottish Champions received £4.3m for Carl Starfelt after the defender swapped Scotland for Spain. Starfelt joined Vigo on a four year deal but with his health issues and a potential relegation, he could be on the move after just one year.

Speaking to Swedish media at the end of March, Starfelt detailed how he had struggled breathing as a result of an issue in his home in Vigo.

“In the beginning I got sick all the time, four or five times a month.

“I was very tired, had trouble breathing through my nose and things like that. It wasn’t a fun period.

“I tried to figure out what it was. I changed my diet, my sleep and all that kind of stuff.

“But then I managed to identify it. There was a hole in the roof. And it’s already damp in Vigo.

“So it would probably have got more moisture in there, and become very mouldy.

“It was new, like nothing I had experienced before. Now I’m living in a hotel, and have been doing so for the last month and a half.

“It feels much better. I have made a full recovery.

“I won’t move back there, even if the mould is removed. I’ll see if I can find something else.

“Otherwise I’ll stay in a hotel for the rest of the season.”

The 28-year-old has been excellent since arriving from Rubin Kazan in the summer of 2021, forming a formidable defensive pairing with Cameron Carter-Vickers. The pair were unbeaten together in Scottish football, an excellent stat that is indicative of the quality between the USA and Swedish Internationalist. Celtic fans largely appreciated the defender’s efforts but this will have been universally given the struggles at the back when CCV was out the team.

Starfelt made 87 appearances for Celtic since arriving from Kazan. In that time, he has scored three times and assisted twice. Rodgers may have wanted to keep Starfelt around, especially when you see that Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke’s signings have been, Starfelt would have been solid in the centre of defence.
