Celtic legend Lubomir Moravcik has moved into local politics. The Slovakian was a cultured midfielder in his playing days but he has now moved into the arena of politics having been elected to the Nitra local council.
As reported by The Herald , Moravcik confirmed that he didn’t fancy emulating another footballer turned politician, George Weah, but he would look after sports in his new role.
“Well, I don’t want to be president of the country like George Weah! That is too much!”
“I am now involved in politics a little in Slovakia. There were elections back in October and I put myself forward.
“The public voted and I received enough votes to be elected to the council in Nitra where I am from and still live.
“It’s a small role. I am the only sportsman involved in the council so I look after sport. That is my business so I suppose it make sense for me to focus on that. It is something different for me and I am enjoying being involved.”
“I like to work a little, but not too much and I am happy just to do a little bit of politics.”
Signed by Dr. Jo Vengolos for £300k aged 33, arguably in the twilight of his career, Moravcik would go onto make a major impact at Celtic Park. In his first game, Moravcik dispelled any doubts about his abilities scoring twice in a memorable 5-1 victory over Rangers.
The talented midfielder, often dubbed ‘The Gift from God’, would go onto 130 appearances for Celtic, scoring 35 goals. Lubo would win 2 SPL Titles, 2 League Cups and 1 Scottish Cup in his four-year spell at the club.
