FIFTY YEARS AGO Celtic played West Ham United in the testimonial for England World Cup hero Bobby Moore. The Scottish Champions went ahead three times but on the night that West Ham toasted one of their finest sons, they roared back to draw level.
Seven of Stein’s European Champions in 1967 lined up against the London side and goals from Bobby Lennox, Jimmy Johnstone and George Connelly threatened to spoil Moore’s testimonial; however, the Claret and Blues scored through Hurst, Ayris and Best to leave matters level.
3000 Celtic fans made the trip to London, for what was Celtic’s first visit to the English capital in twelve years. Although, there were complaints from fans at the prices of admission – even if they weren’t complaining after a six goal thriller between two of Europe’s top sides.
Daily Telegraph reporter Robert Oxby watched the six-goal thriller and remarked in the paper that Celtic’s attacking play but were unfortunate to leave The Boleyn Ground with a draw.
“Bobby Moore, England’s captain, had the glory of his testimonial match at Upton Park stolen from him by a memorable display from Celtic, who last night paid their first visit to London for 12 years,”
