Chelsea's Timo Werner: Rejecting Liverpool was 'best decision'

As Chelsea and Liverpool prepare to take on each other in the Premier League this weekend, Timo Werner discussed his recent move to Stamford Bridge over the summer.

The 24-year-old had the opportunity to join Liverpool with coach Jurgen Klopp over the summer, and even though they won the Premier League title, Werner is still convinced he made the right decision to join Chelsea.

"When I decided to leave Leipzig, I talked to different clubs, of course," Werner said in a news conference, according to ESPN's James Olley. "Next to Chelsea, there were some other clubs I talked to. But for me I don't want to talk so much about other clubs because at the end I decided for Chelsea.

"There are some other clubs like Liverpool, they have a great team and maybe I could fit good in some other team but in the end I decided for Chelsea because it was the best decision I could take, not only because of the style of football but also what they have shown me."

Werner signed with Chelsea on a £47.6 million deal after Liverpool failed to put in an official offer due to concerns over financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic. When Liverpool hesitated, Chelsea took advantage.

Frank Lampard's squad is primed to have a solid campaign after finishing fourth in the Premier League standings last season. With the club trying to win their first PL title since the 2016-17 campaign, Werner wasn't the only player they brought in an attempt to accomplish the feat.

Chelsea have added Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva as they continue to undergo a roster rejuvenation.

The club started out on the right foot on Monday with a 3-1 win over Brighton. Sunday's match against Liverpool will be the ultimate test, but it doesn't seem like Chelsea is the least bit intimidated.
