Brentford's Christian Eriksen Press Association

Christian Eriksen could make Brentford debut Saturday eight months after cardiac arrest

Midfielder Christian Eriksen is on track to make arguably the most remarkable return of the sports year this weekend.

Per Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports, Eriksen will be in the Brentford squad for Saturday's Premier League match versus Newcastle United roughly eight months after the Danish maestro suffered cardiac arrest featuring for his native Denmark at the UEFA European Championship last June.

The 30-year-old had his contract terminated by Inter Milan on Dec. 17 because Italian rules don't permit footballers to compete with the type of implantable cardioverter defibrillator Eriksen had installed after his cardiac event. He officially signed for Brentford before the January transfer window closed and began training with the club earlier this month.

He played 78 minutes against Rangers in a closed-door contest on Monday without experiencing any worrisome setback.

"Christian will be in the squad. He will get on the pitch for his debut tomorrow. It will be amazing," Brentford manager Thomas Frank told reporters on Friday. "It is a big day for all of us, but especially Christian and his family. When he walks out onto that pitch.

"Everyone saw what happened (on the pitch at Euro 2020) and it is another reminder that we are privileged to do what we do, so we need to appreciate every moment. The key thing is that everything has been checked, it is all good with zero chance that something should happen. He and his family are aligned that he should play football, which is very important."

Frank vowed to ease Eriksen back into full-time action.

Saturday is about more than just a feel-good highlight for player and club, as Brentford begin Friday evening local time 14th in the Premier League table but are just four points above the relegation zone.
