Could former Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves be a possible replacement for Kalvin Phillips in January? With the England international’s future at Etihad in doubt, Pep Guardiola’s side may have to dip into the market to replace Phillips if he departs the club.

Wayne Veysey reports for footballinsider247.com that the treble winners have concrete interest in the Portuguese midfielder. Veysey adds that City have Neves on their shortlist to replace Phillips. Furthermore, Veysey also reports that Pep Guardiola is an admirer of the Saudi Arabian-based midfielder.

Footballinsider247.com had previously reported that Neves only joined Al-Hilal on the proviso that he could leave the Middle East quite quickly if the right offer came in. Neves has made 17 appearances for Al Hilal scoring twice and adding one assist since his summer move to the Gulf State.

Ruben Neves as a player would tick a lot of boxes for Manchester City. With his previous experience at Wolves in the Premier League he wouldn’t need a lot of time to settle into the English game. He made 253 appearances for Wolves during his spell at the club. Neves became arguably Wolves most important player before making a big money move to Al Hilal in the summer transfer window.

It would appear that any potential move by Manchester City for Neves would be dependent on Kalvin Phillips future. Graeme Bailey has reported for 90min that Newcastle United are emerging as Phillips preferred destination. The former Leeds United midfielder is keen to secure first-team football ahead of next year’s European Championships.

If Kalvin Phillips does leave in January Ruben Neves may be the ideal replacement. His previous Premier League experience and skillset could be a valuable asset for Manchester City if a move eventuates.
