The agent of former Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez has shed some light on a failed transfer involving the player.
The Colombian centre-back was initially supposed to be on his way to Russia last summer to finalise his transfer to Spartak Moscow for a £13 million transfer fee.
However, the intended move collapsed, and instead, Sanchez ultimately joined the Turkish Super Lig club Galatasaray.
Spartak’s sporting director, Oleg Malyshev, earlier this week admitted that the deal for Sanchez ‘fell through’, even though the defender was prepared to travel from North London.
Speaking to the Russian news outlet Sport Express, Sanchez’s agent, Fernando Villarreal, has revealed the actual reason behind the failed transfer. He stated:
“The real reason is that the transfer simply could not take place,
“The Premier League and the English government did not allow transfers to Russia.”
The player’s agent also mentioned that Sanchez’s family was prepared for the move. He added:
“Davinson and his wife were completely ready to move, the Tottenham chairman allegedly confirming to Spartak that the deal would no longer be going ahead.
“At the moment, when we made the decision, we received a call from Spartak and were told that Daniel Levy informed them that the transfer was impossible.
“There was no problem for the footballer to go to Russia.”
Despite the distraction and his focus on moving to Spartak Moscow, the 27-year-old centre-back managed to make a positive start to his life in Istanbul.
Galatasaray won seven out of eight games in which the former Spurs defender started. However, he has been sidelined since then, missing four games due to a hamstring strain in November and sustaining a toe injury the following month.
Davinson Sanchez has been in recovery since then, and on the other hand, the Lilywhites have bolstered their squad, recently adding Radu Dragusin as a new option in the backline.
