Former Manchester United academy graduate Danny Simpson couldn’t help but laugh at Gabriel Agbonlahor’s assessment of our first pre-season friendly match.

Manchester United beat Liverpool 4-0 in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Nobody, not even us, gloated about the win because we are not naïve enough to get carried away by the outcome of a pre-season friendly.

That didn’t stop former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor from going on a rant about the game not being of any significance – because that’s the sort of rocket science you get from talkSPORT whenever Simon Jordan can take himself away from the mic.

Speaking to Laura Woods and Ally McCoist on Wednesday morning, Agbonlahor insisted United fans should not be getting ahead of themselves, like we needed some sort of warning.

“People talking about last night’s game, and some Man United fans are getting excited, but pre-season doesn‘t matter,” Agbonlahor said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“Honestly, players are at different stages of fitness, playing in Thailand, the weather, the humidity, it’s going to be hard to play in.

“So pre-season is about your fitness, isn’t it? It’s not about results at all. So I wouldn’t look into last night, and it probably could be the last time Man United beat Liverpool until next pre-season!”

I fear for Agbonlahor thinking the game took place at nighttime when it kicked off at 2pm (UK), but that probably means he didn’t even take time to watch the game. That raises the question as to why he would then comment on it?

Moreover, I can assure you that United fans are not getting excited by the first game of the summer. It would take a lot more than that after the disappointing season we just suffered in 2021/22.

Danny Simpson, who currently plays for Bristol City, responded to Agbonlahor’s comments with a tweet that read: “Come on @ga11agbon lol. If they got beat 4-0 the media would have had a field day with the squad and the manager.”

Simpson raises a valid point but that’s the joy of being a United supporter and noticing ABU (anybody but United) press spread their agendas whenever it suits them. Agbonlahor is no different.
