When Warren Zaire-Emery suited up for the French national team, he was in a dream scenario. He broke a longstanding record to become the youngest French international player since 1945.
Furthermore, the 17-year-old scored in his debut after running into the box to finish a pass from Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman for his debut goal against Gibraltar.
However, the celebration of the teenager’s goal was short-lived. Zaire-Emery suffered a harsh tackle on his right ankle. He was forced off the field in the process without even being able to celebrate.
Les Bleus won the contest over Gibraltar rather convincingly, 14-0. After the match, France manager Didier Deschamps gave an update on the somewhat positive teenager from a Paris Saint-Germain perspective.
“From the information I have, the examination is reassuring; there is no fracture, but there is a good big sprain,” Deschamps told TF1 (h/t Culture PSG). “This concern is at least already put aside because it existed at the time, and when we see the act of incredible violence again.
“I prefer that he remembers his first selection for his first goal than for other, more negative reasons. That’s what he did, but it ended sooner than expected. I hope it won’t be too long for him.”
Despite the injury, Zaire-Emery’s inclusion in the starting lineup reflects the trust the coaching staff and team management have in his abilities.
The teenager has already earned the trust of PSG manager Luis Enrique. As a result, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he soon began achieving that level of trust from manager Didier Deschamps.
