Former Nerazzurri goalkeeper and captain Samir Handanovic could begin his coaching career with the Inter Milan academy next season.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews. The outlet also report that Handanovic will received a special commemorative shirt during tomorrow’s Serie A match against Cagliari.

Handanovic spent a total of eleven years wearing the Inter shirt.

The Slovenian joined the Nerazzurri from Udinese during the summer of 2012. And he remained with the club until last summer, when he retired from football.

For more than four years at the club, Handanovic was the captain.

The goalkeeper took over the armband from Mauro Icardi in 2019. And he remained captain until he hung up his club, with another Argentine striker inheriting the captaincy from him in the form of Lautaro Martinez.

Samir Handanovic Could Begin Coaching Career With Inter Academy Next Season

It has always looked likely that whenever Handanovic called time on his playing career, the veteran goalkeeper would continue to work in football.

Moreover, the 39-year-old has maintained his decade-plus-long association with Inter after retiring from playing.

So far, Handanovic has not exactly had a formal role at the Nerazzurri.

Rather, the Slovenian has been involved in scouting. This has included monitoring Inter players who are out on loan.

Moreover, Handanovic has been involved in Inter’s search for a new goalkeeper to replace Yann Sommer in the long term.

Next season, however, FCIN report that Handanovic could take another step into his post-playing career.

The outlet anticipate that there would be a real chance of the 39-year-old beginning his coaching career.

This could be somewhere in Inter’s academy system.

Meanwhile, FCIN report, tomorrow Handanovic will be at the San Siro during Inter’s Serie A match against Cagliari.

Before the match, the former captain will receive a commemorative shirt.

The shirt will have the number 455 on the back. That is the total number of appearances that Handanovic made for Inter across eleven seasons at the club.

Handanovic will join Alessandro Bastoni as the 25-year-old receives his honour for Serie A player of the month for March,
