Former CONI President Gianni Petrucci is in hospital after his car crashed into a ditch, but his condition is not life-threatening.

Petrucci and his wife were in the car in the Valmontone area near Rome when it went off the road, crashing into an eight-metre ditch.

Petrucci was taken to hospital via an air ambulance, while his wife only sustained bruises.

He was diagnosed with several fractured ribs and a cut to the head, but his condition is not life-threatening, according to news agency ANSA.

Petrucci was President of the CONI – the Italian Olympic Committee – from 1999 to 2013, which effectively made him the head of all sport in Italy.

In 2000-01, he was also the temporary commissioner of the FIGC, the Italian Football Federation.

His current role is as President of the Italian Basketball Association.

He is also on the board of directors for Serie A club Salernitana, a role he took in June 2023.
