Manchester United center-back Harry Maguire has accepted an apology from a politician who previously ridiculed him in the parliament of Ghana.

Late last year, MP Isaac Adongo publicly compared vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia's economic management to Maguire's performances on the pitch.

Maguire had been struggling for form at this time, especially at club level.

Adongo referred to Bawumia as Ghana's "economic Maguire", adding that he had scored own goals and was "tackling all the fundamentals of our economy and destroying all of them".

Maguire lost his place as a first-team regular under Erik ten Hag last season but he has started United's last eight games in all competitions.

The 30-year-old has produced some impressive performances during that run of starts. He scored the winner against Copenhagen in a Champions League game in October, days after winning the Player of the Match award in a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.

Adongo mentioned Maguire's name again in parliament this week but this time to praise the footballer.

Adongo said: "If you remember last year I was very quick to compare my big brother, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to Harry Maguire. Mr Speaker I now apologize to Harry Maguire."

He added: "Today Maguire has turned the corner, he's a transformational footballer.

"Harry Maguire is now scoring goals for Manchester United.

"Mr Speaker, Harry Maguire is now a key player for Manchester United."

Footage of Adongo's apology went viral on social media, where it caught the attention of Maguire.

Replying to a tweet containing a video of Adongo's speech, Maguire wrote: "MP Issac Adongo apology accepted. See you at Old Trafford soon".
