There will have been a time when the thought of Steven Gerrard in the managerial hot seat at Anfield wouldn’t have been entirely unappealing.

Liverpool’s captain fantastic, hot off the heels of his success in Scotland seemed, at one point, destined for greater things.

Despite the not entirely undeserved perception of ‘failure’ in the Premier League with Aston Villa, Harry Redknapp has admitted he’d ‘love’ to see the former skipper take over from Jurgen Klopp.

“I’m going to say somebody, and people are going to think that I’m off my head, but I would give it to Steven Gerrard,” the former West Ham boss told Bet Victor (via DAZN).

“I know people will say that he was a failure at Aston Villa, and it didn’t go great there, but he’s a Liverpool man and was an incredible player for them.

“He’s got passion for the game, and I used to listen to him speak when he was at Rangers and always thought he was going to be top drawer. I would love to see him manage Liverpool.”

The Scouser is currently plying his trade in Saudi Arabia having recently agreed a contract extension with Al-Ettifaq.

With the greatest of respect…

Our love for Steven Gerrard, the footballer, is almost unparalleled.

That said, as a manager, we wouldn’t wish to see our Istanbul hero come near the Liverpool job without proving himself in a more reputable job.

The likes of Xabi Alonso and Ruben Amorim, with respect, appear the far more appealing candidates by comparison.

Certainly, when you examine what the former has achieved with Leverkusen in a league typically dominated by Bayern Munich, how can you be anything other than mightily impressed?

It might happen for Gerrard one day, though we sincerely hope that day doesn’t come soon.

Sorry, Harry.
